Eli – Innovation Day 2024 Reflection

In this year’s Innovation Day project, we were tasked to use design thinking to create and test a sled while attempting to learn about and implement as many of the six simple machines as possible. We ended up naming our sled “The Glacial Glider”. Before starting Innovation Day, I was very excited that I was going to be building a hopefully fully functional sled. Still, I was mainly nervous about brainstorming and getting innovative and creative ideas to add simple machines to it. I believe that the main reason our project glowed was because of how much information it had and how well-written it was, I also made a short video advertising the sled which I think was well-needed. If I could go back in time and change one thing about my innovation day project, I would improve the aesthetics, this is what I think was lacking in our project, especially after looking at the other groups, I saw that they had colorful and creative boards and sleds, our board was boring and there were no special designs along with the sled, so I would’ve liked to print designs to place on the sled and board. This year’s innovation day taught me a ton, I got more experience researching, writing, and doing creative work and problem solving such as creating the video and designing the sled. I also learned how to use basic building tools, and if there’s one thing I learned while building the sled, it’s that drilling screws is not as easy as it looks, and I would even spend upwards of 20 minutes trying to just get 1 screw into the wood! In the end, I got much better at learning the basics of drilling in nails, cutting PVC, measuring materials, and a bit of cutting wood. Throughout this project, I had to work a decent chunk of the project at home, because although our information was decently written, I wanted to go above and beyond and add more detail. I believe this made a heavy positive impact on our project. Overall, this year’s Innovation Day project was fun but challenging and it pushed me harder than any project has pushed me before, I am glad I put in the effort because it is always reflected in the end result.

Eli – Grade 8 English Of Mice and Men Ranch Website Assignment

In this assignment, we were tasked to create a website using Google Sites about a ranch that we made based on the ranch seen in the book Of Mice and Men. We had to create a name for the ranch, design it, and make it seem like a legitimate business with meals, schedules, salary, location, benefits, and job offers. learning how Google Sites worked was another benefit to this project and will definitely benefit me in the future. This task was extremely fun and I loved designing the ranch with Google Sites. I hope to do a project similar to this in the future.

Eli – Mon Camion Nourriture

My Smart Goals

My S.M.A.R.T. goal is… Two practical steps I can take to achieve this goal are…
I want to focus on creating a more disciplined lifestyle by increasing my drive and motivation to overcome challenges.
  • Brainstorming a list of strategies to use when I’m feeling stuck/unmotivated
  • Dedicating more personal time to work on healthy habits
I want to improve my study skills by prioritizing my time and starting my studying routine earlier (at least a week in advance).
  • Starting to prepare the day an assessment is shared with me
  • Prepare my materials to review as you get the information
I want to increase my focus during class, ensuring that I am productive and sustain my focus for the whole period.
  • Limit distractions (i.e. talking to friends)
  • Trying new ways to focus when working independently in class (i.e. listening to music)
I want to be more mindful of time management, guaranteeing that I will complete my homework on due date consistently and will not have any trouble with being late.

I will spend the first 45 minutes of my time at home working on homework.

  • I want to be able to wake up earlier for school (5:30)  and be able to get ready earlier
    • Ensuring that I will not be late by creating an efficient morning routine.
  • Checking my homework board and completing my tasks in a set homework space at my house
I want to be more organized with my school work so that I can easily access documents and so that there is no confusion between my work between classes and teachers.

I will keep my papers organized in a binder to ensure that they are not misplaced.

  • Organizing all school documents and folders. (i.e. adding titles, date, name and class to documents and color-coding and highlighting key words)
  • Cleaning and going through my desk and locker (i.e. clearing old unneeded papers and putting papers in the correct folder/binder.

Eli & Adam T. Patriots Vs. Loyalists Assignment

For this assignment, Mr. Wash tasked us to pick a side for an ad, where we would be convincing a target audience to join the Patriots or Loyalists. Eli and Adam T. Grouped up for this project, and we chose the Patriots. After we picked our side, we were sent to research all about the Patriots and Loyalists and use every bit of info to help us defend our case on why you should be a Patriot. Our target audience was men that would join us in our battle for liberty and freedom, which was the Patriot’s main goal. We found this project very interesting as we favored the Patriots and enjoyed researching info about them. The hardest part we faced during this assignment was researching for the Patriots as we had to look through many websites and paraphrase the info. Thank you for reading our OJCS Blog Post.

Pirkei Avot Chapter Two Verse Assignment

Around a month ago, Mr. Wash assigned us the Pirkei Avot Chapter Two Verse Assignment, where we were tasked to choose five verses from Pirkei Avot Chapter Two, find the meaning of the verses, the lesson we can learn from them, and then find songs that connect to the verses and explain the connection between them, then we just added a work cited for the songs and well… Made a blog post. This assignment has taught me a variety of valuable lessons, including, to persevere through hardships and not to give up, to put effort into things, and to treat prayer with dignity and respect. These are just a few of the lessons that I have learned from Pirkei Avot Chapter Two of this project. For me, and probably the majority of the class, the biggest challenge of this project was finding the right songs, it took a ridiculously shocking amount of time for me to find all the songs. The easiest part for me surprised me, but it was finding the meaning of the verses, I really thought I was gonna be spending hours of my time trying to find out what each verse meant and while some made me scratch my head a bit, It wasn’t crazy difficult like finding the songs. Thank you for reading my OJCS Blog Post.

I chose verses #7, 13, 2, 1, and 16 for my Pirkei Avot music assignment.

Verse #7

“One who increases flesh, increases worms; one who increases possessions, increases worry; one who increases wives, increases witchcraft; one who increases maidservants, increases promiscuity; one who increases man-servants, increases thievery; one who increases Torah, increases life; one who increases study, increases wisdom; one who increases counsel, increases understanding; one who increases charity, increases peace. One who acquires a good name, acquired it for himself; one who acquires the words of Torah, has acquired life in the World to Come.” (Avos 2:7).

I chose the song Thank You by Dido. This quote from Pirkei Avot’s chapter two implies that sometimes, what we think is reasonable if not in moderation, and if it is in excess quantities, can lead to adverse consequences, one example being increased possessions cause to worry. You will have more possessions, but you will also have more responsibility for them, which means we will have to cherish, take extra care of, and keep track of the extra possessions, which will increase our worries. Additionally, it explains that while that is true, increasing Torah study, charity, and reputation is a positive action that will lead to a fulfilling life and peace when we die and go to heaven. A lesson we can learn from verse seven is that in life, there are certain things that we believe are great for us but if we don’t use them in moderation, they can corrupt our lives which is why it is important to have everything in moderation so that we don’t overcomplicate situations and create new problems. Looking at the song Thank You, Dido says

“I’m late for work again, And even if I’m there, they’ll all imply That I might not last the day

And then you call me

And it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad

And I want to thank you”

This shows that the artist Dido is going through a tough time in the song, and she might be struggling and might not have much, but she is still incredibly grateful for the people she knows and the things that she has. This connects to the verse because this verse is about having too much can give you negative consequences at times, and she says that she’s fine with not much and is still grateful and happy for the minimal items she has, adding to the point that you do not need an excessive quantity of items to be happy in life.

Verse #13

“Be meticulous with the reading of the Shma and with prayer. When you pray, do not make your prayers routine, but [an entreaty of] mercy and a supplication before the Almighty, as is stated “For He is benevolent and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, and relenting of the evil decree” (Joel 2:13), (Avos 2:7). I chose the song Livin’ On a Prayer by Bon Jovi. Verse 13 in Pirkei Avot chapter two tells us that the Shma prayer, and prayers in general, are to be treated with care and not as a chore or a habit, prayers should be treated with respect and utmost compassion, not only prayers but we must also apply these values to God. When we pray to God, we should do so with love, kindness, and sincerity. As well, it teaches us that God is kind, loving, and patient to us and that we must realize his compassionate nature. We must treat God with an abundance of respect, authority, and sincerity and his prayers with respect. The lesson we can learn from this verse is that we must be grateful for God as he does everything for us, and the least we can do is realize everything he does for us, and when we pray we should do it with respect for him. In the song Livin’ On a Prayer, Bon Jovi says that

“Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear

Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer

Woah, we’re halfway there”

The song’s lyrics refer to hope and pursuing goals. This relates to the verse about taking prayers seriously and not treating them like a task. The piece discusses how he is relying on hope for his life and praying for a positive outcome although he is entirely relying on prayer for his life, he is not acting like it’s a chore. It shows how much trust he has in God and his prayers, and that he doesn’t treat praying like a mere chore. This relates to the verse as the verse’s main focus is on the importance of respecting praying.

Verse #2

“Beautiful is the study of Torah with the way of the world, for the toil of them both causes sin to be forgotten. Ultimately, all Torah study that is not accompanied with work is destined to cease and to cause sin. Those who work for the community should do so for the sake of Heaven; for then merit of their ancestors shall aid them, and their righteousness shall endure forever. And you, [says G‑d,] I shall credit you with great reward as if you have achieved it.” (Avos 2:2). I have chosen the song Heal The World by Michael Jackson. In Chapter Two of Pirkei Avot, this verse states that if we only study Torah and do not do other work, it will lead to sin, this means that although studying Torah is an important value and considered important in Judaism, we must do it in moderation and balance it with other tasks such as our job and taking care of our family. It also mentions that when working for others, we should do it purely for them, not expecting any rewards in return. However, as a result, we will be greatly rewarded and have righteousness if we do this. One lesson that this verse teaches us is that when performing good deeds and mitzvot, we shouldn’t do it for ourselves, and if we truly don’t do it for something in return, then we will get rewarded in return. We must do deeds for others’ happiness, not ours. The song Heal The World was chosen because this song encourages unity and compassion and working for others purely for a compassionate reason. In the song, MJ says

“Heal the world

Make it a better place

For you and for me, and the entire human race”

The song refers to saving the world and helping the people that are in dire need of help, he also mentions that he doesn’t just wanna make the world better for himself, but for everyone, he isn’t selfish and cares about everyone reflecting on the part of the verse where it says to help people for their benefit and not your own.

Verse #1

“Which is the right path for man to choose for himself? Whatever is harmonious for the one who does it, and harmonious for mankind.

Be as careful with a minor mitzvah as with a major one, for you do not know the rewards of the mitzvot. Consider the cost of a mitzvah against its rewards, and the rewards of a transgression against its cost.

Contemplate three things, and you will not come to the hands of transgression: Know what is above from you: a seeing eye, a listening ear, and all your deeds being inscribed in a book.” (Avos 2:1).

The song I chose for this Pirkei Avot Chapter Two Verse was All The Above by Maino, This verse means that the path that a person should choose is harmony for not only themselves but for others as well. It also says that we must put care and love into our mitzvot and commandments no matter how big or small and we must treat both with equal care. We should also consider the consequences of our transgressions/actions. It tells us that we must know three things to avoid sinning. To always know that there is someone above with higher power observing us. We must also know that we need to be accountable for our sins and that our actions are being documented. A lesson we can learn from this quote is that we need to think about what we are doing before we do it, we have to avoid wrongdoing and if we do something wrong we shouldn’t let that choose who we are. We should instead rise above it and be better. I chose the song All The Above because the song is about the singer’s life, the song mentions how he’s gone to jail, but although he’s faced many hardships, in the end, he rose above them and became a better person. In the song, Maino says

“Just cause’ I rose to the top, top

And everybody knows my name

They know, they know

Still grindin’, still hustlin’

No more pain, no more sufferin’”

These Lyrics talk about how he rose to the top after being through hardships, this relates to the verse because it says that all our actions are documented, and if we commit a wrong act, we should do our best to recover and be a better being for ourselves, God and the people around us. It also adds to the point of giving harmony to ourselves and others.

Verse #16

“It is not incumbent upon you to finish the task, but neither are you free to absolve yourself from it. If you have learned much Torah, you will be greatly rewarded, and your employer is trustworthy to pay you the reward of your labors. And know that the reward of the righteous is in the World to Come.” (Avos 2:16). I chose the song The Climb by Miley Cyrus. Verse sixteen in Perkei Avot Chapter Two starts by saying that although we aren’t expected to complete every task, we should still put an effort into our work and that we cannot ignore it. It then explains that if we study a lot we will be rewarded for our actions, It then says that we need to know that our ultimate reward will be received in the afterlife. The lesson we can learn from verse sixteen is that we must persevere and try our best and put in an effort with everything we do. We cannot hide away from our problems and ignore them. The song The Climb relates to the verse because it is about how Miley Cyrus fights through tough battles, and even when she loses, she put in an effort and stands back up until she wins. We can see this message in the lyrics.

“But I, I gotta keep tryin’

Gotta keep my head held high

There’s always gonna be another mountain

I’m always gonna wanna make it move

Always gonna be an uphill battle

Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose”

She puts in effort and even when she loses she doesn’t give up until she completes her task, which is the main point of the verse.

Science Filtration Project – With Noah

Starting in late February, we were assigned the innovation day filtration project, where we used the Scientific Method to create an effective filter for water filtering.  Apart from learning about filtration, this project has really helped me with communicating and working well with a partner, as we had to come up with a hypothesis and filter design that we both agree with, we had to do organizing and choose who does what section of the project. When I thought about and compared my own filtration project to others, The main thing I would change if I redid this project would be to change the appearance of the board and filter design itself as I thought it was lacking when compared to the different projects. However, I think our group did well on our info and presentation. Midway through the project, I noticed that me and my partner we’re behind, so I made a plan that after I ate dinner, I would work on the filtration project for about forty-five minutes – an hour and a half after doing this for a few days, I got caught up with work and even got a bit ahead which saved our project. The OJCS filtration project was not only a successful learning experience but also an opportunity to work better with others and to get used to the scientific method which will prepare me for the future, this has also been an amazing chance for me to get used to working during free time to get ahead. Thank you for reading about my innovation day experience.
